The History of the Degree Program

Master of Divinity Degree
Reverend Morgan, eager to test the process, enrolled as the first Seeker, the name originally given to ministers seeking to broaden their horizons. His thesis was accepted and the first UBU degree of Master of Divinity was conferred on Rev. Morgan in the autumn of 1994 for his work on the organization of the University.

UBU was officially launched on February 23, 1995, and began accepting other applications for Master of Divinity Degrees. The first seeker to matriculate fully through the university was Rev. Donna Hooper.

After the first year of operation, the Board of Regents drafted the current Mission Statement. It was adopted on April 10th of 1996.

Doctor of Divinity Degree
UBU’s program for the Doctor of Divinity Degree was formulated in 1996 to include a community service component that required the applicant to design an ongoing product or service that would serve the Brotherhood of Man. The doctoral dissertation required physical documentation of this product or service. In each case, whether for the Master’s Degree or the Doctorate, the underlying principle was the strengthening of a candidate’s personal ministry allowing you to be you.

Universal Brotherhood’s Honorary Degree Program.
In the fall of 1996 the work of Elizabeth Kübler-Ross was brought to the attention of the board. It was decided that UBU would establish an Honorary Degree Program.

Dr. Ross’s work with the terminally ill was recognized with the first such degree on October 16th 1996. This set a tradition of honoring the outstanding life work given toward the betterment of mankind.

The Reverends Jeni and Richard Prigmore received honorary degrees on October 6th of 1995 at the UBM Conference in  Colorado for their work in founding the Universal Brotherhood Movement.

The Reverend Albert Schatz  received an honorary degree in 2004  honoring Dr. Schatz and his work on streptomycin and tuberculosis.

Scholarship Program

The Reverend Albert Schatz Scholarship Program was introduced in 2004 as a way of honoring Dr. Schatz and his work on streptomycin and tuberculosis. This program was introduced at the UBM conference in 2004. The idea was so popular that seven additional individuals agreed to fund scholarships, with the result that eight individuals at the Gathering received scholarships. This program has allowed worthy scholars to continue their spiritual growth, under the guidance of the university, and to receive recognition in the world so that it will empower their ministry.

By the end of 2007 UBU had graduated more than 175  scholars, conferring 112 Masters of Divinity degrees and 61 Doctorates of Divinity since its inception. The thesis work of their various ministries has ranged from personal development documentation to understandings of the multiple areas of spirituality to documentation of ministries reaching out to the community.

Regents serving  the Board  have a chance to review some of the finest spiritual work on the planet. Many Scholars have written books, published and elevated their spiritual lives as a result of completing their Universal Brotherhood University degree work. The thesis work of their various ministries has ranged from personal development documentation to understandings of the multiple areas of spirituality to documentation of ministries reaching out to the community.
